The EU recently selected 13 new strategic raw material projects outside its borders to ensure the supply of critical minerals. These new projects have increased the EU’s global strategic raw materials network to 60. The 13 projects are expected to raise a total of 5.5 billion euros (6.3 billion U.S. dollars) in capital investment. Ten of the projects focus on materials necessary for battery technology, such as lithium, cobalt, manganese and graphite, while the other two projects target the production of rare earth elements.
These new projects are supported by the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, passed in 2023, which sets ambitious targets for the procurement of critical raw materials by 2030. The EU aims to mine at least 10% of annual demand, process 40% and recycle 25% within the region or through strategic partnerships.
