LKAB, a Swedish mining company, recently said that if its Per Geijer mine is put into production, the company can meet about 18% of Europe’s rare earth metal demand in the long term, and it has begun to build related processing plants.
The company has started construction of the 800 million kroner (73 million US dollars) Luleå plant in northern Sweden, which will process mining waste (including waste that may come from the Per Geijer mine) into rare earth concentrates, phosphoric acid and gypsum. Commercial production will begin at the end of 2029 or early 2030. The mine has about 1.7 million tons of rare earth oxide resources.
